Avoiding blisters

Scott_Burrows's picture

After spending 2 months recovering from my first running related injury (the not very exotic Shinsplints), I have returned with new trainers that stop me pronating and custom made insoles, it appears if the shinsplints are gone!!! however now I can't run without getting really bad blisters on the arch of my foot!!

Can anyone advise me as to how to avoid these blisters? any tips are welcome.

Thanks

Scott

Well might not be much help

Well might not be much help if you've already stumped up for new shoes but I always go for a 1/2 UK size bigger than my day shoes to stop too much rubbing (your feet swell when you run).

Other than that getting some thin-ish sports socks might also help rather than the thicker traditional piled type - there are quite a few 'specialist' running socks available that are double lined and are supposed to prevent rubbing and blisters - they're mighty expensive in comparison to what you get from Sportsworld, but if they do the trick then why not.

Finally it's worth making sure that you find a shoe brand that is right for you - I've found through trial and error that Nike tend to suit me the best as they have quite generous width-wise and although the yearly models come and go the manufacturers tend to keep the same geometry on the shoe lasts, - so this years Moto-Storm / Air Pegasus will fit me just as well as the ones five years ago.
