Dorando Pietri has a lot to answer for!

It’s exactly 100 years ago today, 24 July 1908, that he and 55 other racers set of on the first marathon to be run at its now recognised distance of 26 miles 385 yards.  The race started at Windsor Castle and finished at the White City stadium at the London Olympics.  Finishing first he was then disqualified but became one of the best known people not to win Olympic gold.  So tonight when you’re out training and wondering why you’re putting your body through all this torture – its Dorando’s fault!
